When my mom suggested that we limit of our gift giving this year and instead focus more on doing things as a family, I jumped at the opportunity.  The older I get the more and more I crave quality time with loved ones because I know that life is short; and that our memories will last forever.  I mean don't get me wrong, I enjoy giving and receiving gifts but even more so I love "time" because its something that is so valuable and yet can't be bought.  Below I've jotted down a few ways in which you can give an experience this holiday season.  Whether it's doing something at home, taking a day trip or volunteering, go outside of the box this Christmas and give something that will last forever.

5 Ways to Give an Experience This Holiday Season

See a play or musical performance

Put some of the money that might have gone into un-necessary gifts towards doing something special like dinner a play.

Do something at home

Whether its "pool, puzzles, and pinot" night as my mom has come up with; a "make your own pizza night"; or a "spa day", get creative and do something in the comfort of your own home.

Physical Activity

One of my favorite things to do as a family is some sort of physical activity such as bowling, throwing a ball around, or hiking.  Physical activities are great because they generally low-key, provide an opportunity for everyone to get involved, and welcome conversation.

Take a day trip

Experiencing something new such as taking a day trip.  Whether its going into the city or hiking in the mountains, your sure to make memories that will last.  Wherever you go, do some research ahead of time to see what you can do for free (i.e. museums, tours, etc.).

Volunteer

Volunteering as a family is something that will undoubtedly bring you closer together.  Not only are you serving but your are experiencing a lot of the same emotions (i.e. gratitude and empathy).
