Bags of Affirmation
Something that I like to do throughout the year but especially during these cold winter months, is to make up and distribute bags of affirmation. These paper bags are filled with snacks, clothes and encouraging words created for and handed out to those who we see standing on the street corner asking for money. If I’m able to, I try to find a place to park near by so that I can walk over and give the bag to the person standing there; allowing them the chance for them to talk and to have someone there to listen. There is nothing wrong with handing the bag to someone at the stop light however by taking the time to get out of the car and to walk over to them, you are showing them great respect. You are letting them know that they are seen, that they are loved and that you recognize them as a fellow human being.
I have a vivid memory of an encounter with a man standing on a corner a few years ago. I was traveling through Florida and remember passing by a guy on the corner who held a sign that read, “I’m not a zombie”. As we rounded our turn I recall looking through the car window into his eyes and seeing a man that was completely competent but who was just in a tight spot financially. When I looked into his face I saw someone that could have been someone’s father, he was someone’s son. What happened to him that led him to where he was today? What had gone wrong? This incident cut me to the core as I was frankly reminded by his sign that he was indeed not a zombie, not someone to just pass by but that he was a human being just like us.
For many people, myself included, it can be routine to see people asking for money on street corners or at intersections. I find that we usually do one of two things, the first being to give jostle around the dashboard for some spare change that we give to them; silently hoping that it goes to good use and not drugs of alcohol. The second being that we ignore them. We look down at our phones or straight ahead, willing the light to turn green so that we can move past the uncomfortable situation at hand. I used to be one of those people; who didn’t feel satisfied with either of those options. I felt like either way I wasn’t “doing good”. By making up and handing out these bags we aren’t solving the problem of poverty or homelessness. The bags of affirmation are meant to be just that, affirmation to the men and women receiving them that they are seen, that they are heard and that they are loved not just by us but by God.
It can be incredibly overwhelming when you take the time to consider the amount of poverty that exists not only in our country but around the world. You see these men and women standing on the street corners and realize that they represent a fraction of the number of those in need who are suffering every day. Mother Teresa once said that,
“I never look at the masses as my responsibility. I look only at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. Just one, one, one. You get closer to Christ by coming closer to each other. As Jesus said, ‘Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me.’ So you begin…I begin. I picked up one person - maybe if I didn’t pick up that one person I wouldn’t have picked up the others. The whole work is only a drop in the ocean. But if we don’t put the drop in, the ocean would be one drop less. Same thing for you. Same thing in your family. Same thing in the church where you go. Just begin…one, one, one. At the end of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made or how many great things we have done. We will be judged by, ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread - but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing - but naked of human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks - but homeless because of rejection. This is Christ in distressing disguise.”

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person that you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever - and that is the point of the mountain.”
Whenever people hear the name, “making room for peace” they usually smile and say “what a beautiful name” or “what is the story behind that?” Well today, we are sharing that story with you.
It’s a powerful practice designed to encourage us to look within and examine our core values, how we want to show up in this world, how we want to feel.
Looking back on 2020, I think a lot of us could say that at one point or another we were searching for peace. Amidst all of the chaos, the pain and the unknowing I imagine that we tried a variety of things to bring us some sense of calm, some sense of peace.
I started my morning like most others, got up, made coffee, grabbed some toast, and went to sit down on the sofa to watch the sunrise but this morning I have to say, was incredibly powerful.
We love connecting with y’all through beautiful photos on our feeds but there is just something more personal about a video. It is our hope that we will be able to provide consistent video content about our projects, our mission and our adventures.
Just about every afternoon, I’ve been escaping outdoors (social distance style) to get some fresh air and to PRAY through all of these thoughts and feelings. My heart is that all of this is leading others to do the same. To slow down. To evaluate their lives. To commit to change. To make room for peace.
There are people out there who are waiting for someone like you to say, “hey I struggle with this too but let me tell you about the grace that I have received.” We have an opportunity to use our weaknesses for the glory of God, pointing people to Him.
Have you ever felt blessed by simply being in someone’s presence? That’s exactly how I felt working with the Rivera family on the styling of their home this past winter.
There are days when I wake up, roll over and immediately start scrolling through my phone. Sleepy-eyed and with my hair still in a messy bun I begin to check my email, take a look at the weather, and head over to Instagram to see what’s going on.
By making up and handing out these bags we aren’t solving the problem of poverty or homelessness. The bags of affirmation are meant to be just that, affirmation to the men and women receiving them that they are seen, that they are heard and that they are loved not just by us but by God.
We know that the process of styling and decluttering can be overwhelming, which is why we encourage you to invite us to come alongside of you to guide and to cheer you on.
Every year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. Whether you yourself suffer with mental illness or you have a friend or family member who suffers, we have all been affected in some way by mental illness.
The older we get, the more we tend to value community. However for the longest time it was not a high priority in my life. It wasn’t until I had graduated college, gotten married and moved to a new city that I realized how much I longed for a core group of men and women that I could share life with.
The name "making room for peace" actually came to me during that time of anxiety and questioning. I had had another blog at the time that had experienced some relative success but had started to feel superficial to me. I knew that just as with my spiritual life, I wanted something with more depth, that discussed topics such as decluttering and faith.
Wife, mother of four, and owner of Abundant Life Partner’s, Meghan is one busy woman! I wanted to sit down with her to learn her secrets to having such a positive attitude, energy and how she makes room for peace in her life.
Rebeca Howe is one of those people who when you first meet, you immediately feel at home with. Her warm, bubbly personality lights up every room that she walks into; and her words of affirmation leave you feeling loved and valued.
You see that moment in time I began to carry those words close to my heart. I didn't see myself beautiful. I looked at all the girls in my school and thought: God why did you create me this way?
While we may be aware that there is an issue that needs to be addressed, we often have a hard time identifying what that issue, or block really is.
We have only this one sweet and wonderful life to live. Let us not waste it because because we forget who we are. Instead, let's try to remember who God is and what that says about us. And when He calls you or me to be still for a while, let us be unafraid to wait for Him —to watch Him paint the sky.
Even though God graciously healed me from the anxiety and depression that I used to suffer from, I still go through occasional bouts of each (lasting anywhere from 3 - 10 days). These bouts can be triggered by a variety of things but more often than not stem from: a hormonal imbalance and negative thoughts. I talk a lot about "peace" around here and I want you to know that you can still have it even while occasionally struggling with these issues.
Crystal Seay is one of those people that you don’t have to meet in person to feel like you already know. Her encouraging, spirited personality is contagious and can be felt on her and her husband's Instagram page. Wife and mother of 2, Crystal along with her husband Paul just completed the process of downsizing from a 1,300 sq. ft. home to a 400 sq. ft. RV in Jupiter, Florida.
We can't always control what we are thinking but we can take our thoughts captive, and learn to identify when certain thoughts may lead us towards a downward spiral of negative thinking. Thinking that if gone unchecked for long periods of time can lead to depression and...
We can only love the Lord our God with all of our heart, strength, soul, and mind when we spend time with Him daily and meditate on His word. Its by spending time with him, talking with him, and listening to him that we will grow in our relationship with Him - falling more and more in love with Him.
How we begin our morning sets the tone for how the rest of our day will go. When we begin our day with intention, the rest of our day will follow suit. That's not to say that frustrating things aren't going to happen (coffee spills occur and no one can predict traffic) but that we can at least do our part in trying to set the tone.
We all go through seasons in life when things feel particularly chaotic at home and at work. A change in career, the addition of a new family member, or a big move for example, can leave us feeling as if our whole world has been turned upside down and our routine thrown out the window.
Whether your new to the area or looking to get more involved in you community, volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to serve and to connect. The act of volunteering is something that in my opinion, should be done on a regular basis because it forces us to look outside of ourselves and to pour our love into others.
We are likely to have peace of mind when we take care of items on our to-do list, minimize the noise in our life and set boundaries. But what really is peace? Where does it come from and how do we get more of it?
Vision boards are a beautiful way of visualizing what you would like your future to hold. What you would like to be doing, who you would like to be with, where you would like to be, and how you would like to feel.
Collaborating with Hound & Sparrow Films this past summer, we partnered to create this beautiful video, sharing the heart behind what we do here at Making Room for Peace.
