Creating an Autumn Floral Arrangement with Front Porch Flower Co.
Fresh flowers and greenery are one of my favorite indulgences... They instantly breathe life into a space and their range of colors, textures, shapes, and smells never cease to fascinate me; along with all of the ways in which you can arrange them. Typically I'll pick up a variety of blooms from Trader Joes (or my local park...) and create an arrangement of my own. I've never been a fan of a perfectly precise bouquet much preferring something organic and wild. Local florist, Diane Fulton of Front Porch Flower Co. is the same way. "I much prefer free-form, asymmetrical arrangements that came about organically...it's a surprise every time you create when your not focused on precision and instead let the flowers, the event, the palette, the textures, guide your design." I asked Diane to meet up with me one morning at Hip Innovative Studio Boutique in Newport News, to teach me the basics for creating an autumn floral arrangement along with some tips for keeping it alive!
I'm usually not particularly gentle with working on a flower arrangement however I get nervous when stems start to get tangled.
It's okay to be a little rough. Flowers, especially wildflowers, are used to being outside in the elements; moved around by the wind and animals. They'll be alright.
Do you prefer more precise arrangements or ones that a bit more free-form?
I much prefer free-form, asymmetrical arrangements that came about organically...it's a surprise every time you create when your not focused on precision and instead let the flowers, the event, the palette, the textures, guide your design.
How would you describe your style?
Unpretentious, flexible, unforced, and fluid - the possibilities offered by any palette of colors and textures and scents always gives me goosebumps, like a story waiting to be told. There are no words to describe the awe-inspiring natural beauty in God's handiwork. The wilder the better.
I love that you use a mixture of fauna that is both local and sourced. [On the way to the shoot, Diane had picked some beautiful stems from the side of the parkway. They ended being our favorite pieces to work with!] Do you have favorite flowers and fauna that you enjoy working with?
Yes! One of my favorites is waxflower (any color, but the orange/copper shade in the fall is my favorite - such a delicious alternative to baby’s breath, and it smells heavenly!), and I love limelight, white hydrangeas, white peonies, orange tulips, cream stock, and Bells of Ireland. I’m crazy about variegated greenery like Pittsporum and Aspidistra, and I love cream solidago, Sweet Annie, and Safari Sunset, and all of the fragrant cedars and pines and firs in the winter. Plants with berries like Hypericum, Pepperberry, and Privett Berry add such amazing texture and pop. And since fall and the autumn color palette are my favorites, I really enjoy using bittersweet, nandina, and pumpkin tree, as well as so many locally-grown (and often roadside-wild) beauties like goldenrod, broom corn, cotton pods, ornamental peppers, celosia, and cattails. Anything “different” and unexpected in a bouquet or arrangement, like sea oats, millet, basil, hops, pokeberry, or anything else that I find in a vegetable garden or on the side of the road . . .
What can you to do to make an arrangement last?
1.) If you don't have packets of flower food, a dash of bleach can be added to the water in your vases.
2.) Cut all of your stems at a sharp angle to allow the water from the vase to move up to the flower head.
3.) Remove the majority of the leaves on the stem: one, so that the water will go to the flower head and two, the leaves can muddy up the water.
4) Always start with a clean receptacle, and change the water every two days. Pull out any flowers/greenery that are browning when you change the water.
5) Keep your arrangements away from direct sunlight, vents, and heat sources.
How do you know when an arrangement is done?
I’m constantly tweaking until it’s delivered….
What is your favorite part about being a florist?
I really enjoy the creative process of being able to take someone’s color palette and vision, choose the flowers and greenery that fit and compliment that palette, and bring their vision to life and form. Delivering a bride’s vision for her flowers on her wedding day, and watching her catch her breath at the sight of her bouquet, is an indescribable high.
I think I’m a natural teacher, too, so being able to develop and lead creative flower arranging workshops (like “Blooms & Brews”) in partnership with local venues and businesses, and bring people together for these casual gatherings is so rewarding for me. I love coming up with the different topics, and finding ways to make the workshops unique and attractive and fun, while showcasing other local vendors. Small businesses have to stick together and support each other, and this is a great way to do that for me and FPFC!

Fast-forward to my late twenties, when I started MRFP, where I brought this holistic approach to our business. At the end of the day, I don't just want to create "pretty interiors", I want to design spaces that..
Some days and weeks are busier than others, depending on where we’re at with our projects, however for the most part this is what a day-in-the-life looks like for me.
Collaborating with Hound & Sparrow Films this past summer, we partnered to create this beautiful video, sharing the heart behind what we do here at Making Room for Peace.
If your familiar with our work here at Making Room for Peace, then you know that when it comes to all of our design projects, we love to go custom! The design of the Harfield Project was no exception. Today we are breaking down seven ways where we went custom.
Out of all of the rooms in the house, the sunroom is definitely the place to be! Between the comfy seating, the amazing view of the river and the bar… this room is all about relaxing and having a good time.
When it came the design of the great room, we kept the base of it neutral but then brining in layer after layer of pattern and color. The effect feels thoughtful and lived-in.
As we headed into 2022, we’re making a few tweaks and changes to our design services that we offer. We are going to be implementing a 3-tier system for our design services, to better accommodate our client’s varying budgets and needs.
So I know I said that Office 01 was one of my favorite offices at Cedar Counseling & Wellness, but Office 07 IS hands-down my favorite. Moody, modern and masculine… I definitely wouldn’t mind working here every day!
Walking into waiting area 01, we wanted clients to feel safe and secure, while with waiting area 02, we wanted something a bit more bright, and open. Being a multi-use space: waiting area, yoga studio, kitchen, walk way, etc. it had to serve a multitude of purposes.
When it comes to any space that we design, we want people to walk in and immediately feel safe and at peace. This is especially true for the counselors offices that we regularly work on but even more so for Cedar Counseling & Wellness.
Our interior design clients come to us not because they have no sense of style but because they sort of know what they like and they sort of know what they don’t like, and they need a professional’s help putting it together. Plain and simple.
When working to turn your master bedroom into a peaceful retreat, its all about a feeling. You want it to feel soft, cozy and comfortable. A haven, where you can rest in.
Similar to the design of the client’s last dining room, we kept the design of the Westmoreland Project dining room fairly simple. A few simple changes helped to make a large impact!
Its hard to find the words to express how much we enjoyed designing this home. Gracious in scale and with good bones, we were given an empty palette to create something beautiful and meaningful that would live on with this family for years to come.
We are so excited to share that we are featured on Style Me Pretty Living today, highlighting the Del Ray Project!
We love connecting with y’all through beautiful photos on our feeds but there is just something more personal about a video. It is our hope that we will be able to provide consistent video content about our projects, our mission and our adventures.
Our homes are the very places where we gather together with friends and family, where we escape to after a long day - our homes are where memories are made.
Our inspiration board really set the tone for the room in regards to the overall feel and look… We wanted this space to feel a bit more elegant and romantic than the other rooms in the house, while still being accessible.
While it was important to add in an eclectic element (i.e. the gallery wall), it was important not to loose the graciousness of the room. Being the more formal of the two rooms, we kept the furnishings and decor fairly tailored.
We often find this with our interior styling clients, that while they may have a beautiful home, it doesn’t quite feel “finished”. Maybe they just moved in or maybe they’ve lived there for years; our job is to come in and turn their “house” into a “home”.
When it came to the styling of this Toano kitchen nook, we wanted to design something that felt “fresh” and “happy”. Taking note of the colors in the painted buffet, we went with a blue and white color scheme, with pops of green from the plants.
As you’ll see, each office in the Abundant Life Partners office space is a bit different but overall, they have a very peaceful, natural vibe. This is especially true for this front office, where we used a lot of grays, white, green, and natural wood tones.
Even more important than “function”, is Jon’s desire to keep things Christ-centered. We did this by strategically placing his special piece of art on the wall above his desk
In light of our climate change crisis, we as a small business wanted to look within to identify ways in which we could make positive change.
While the Rivera’s study is my probably my favorite room in the house, their master bedroom felt like one of the most important ones to design. When walking through for the first time with Meka, she shared, “ I just want it to be a place where I can come and unwind.”
The largest room on the second floor by far, its really the perfect space for three growing boys. As I walked around, I could see the potential.
If you’ve been following us for a while now you might recall how we took this completely blank space and turned it into one of those most peaceful therapists offices in town!
We understand that working with an interior stylist is an investment, so we wanted to walk you through our process today, discussing with you what exactly you can expect.
The oldest of the two being an artist, we needed to make sure that we carved out a space where she could create. The younger on the other hand, needed floor space and storage for her toys. With a full-sized bunk-bed in a 10 x 10 room, we had our work carved out for us!
One of the things that I loved about working with this particular client is how organized they were, as well as their amazing style! A mix of traditional and modern, with a touch of coastal; it was right up our alley.
