Stoney Creek Project Reveal | the Dining Room

“Calming, coastal, kid-friendly… basically what you did at the Abundant Life Partners office,” was the direction that we received when starting out on the design of the Stoney Creek Project. Excited by this, we quickly began dreaming up ways in which we could transform their space. Like a lot of Americans, this sweet family of six had lived in their current space for several years but between work, kids and soccer practice, hadn’t gotten around to really turning their house into a home. The result was that their current space felt dated, uncomfortable and uninspiring. Coming to us, they were ready to make a change, wanting to create something that could be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come.

For this project, we focused on the first floor, which included the: entry, family room, living room, and dining room. Between the addition of new floors, paint, light fixtures, furniture, and decor… this was going to be our biggest transformation yet! Today, we are so excited to share the reveal of the dining room with you!

The inspiration board really set the tone for this home… knowing the owner’s taste and style after having worked with them on the Abundant Life Partners project, I envisioned a color palette of soft, cool neutrals: grays, blues, white with pops of warmth. Originally from California, we wanted to bring in some of that laid-back “California cool” vibes mixed with some coastal elements.

Even from the beginning, there were a lot of things going for this dining room: tall ceilings, big windows and a solid dining room table. Due to the space and how it opens up into the living room I knew that with a few tweaks here and there, we could transform this room in no time!

I mean, I could just sit in this dining room all day… its just so dreamy! A large part of that had to do with change in wall color (Beachglass by Benjamin Moore) and the lightening of the furniture. While before this room sported a traditional, wood dining table and chairs we tweaked the arrangement by painting the dining table (Pure White by Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan, with a thin layer of the dark wax) and trading in the old chairs for new woven ones. This is a great design tip for anyone on a budget! Keep your dining room table (as is or updated with a coat of paint) and then freshen things up with a set of new chairs. You can have a of the chairs the same or have the end two stand-out, like we did with these woven wing-back chairs.

Either way, you want to make sure that your seating is durable and comfortable! This was a high priority when it came to the dining room, as the Stoney Creek family really desired to entertain more. “The problem is just don’t have enough seating.” We fixed that by adding another leaf to the dining room table and selecting some chairs that were comfortable and yet not too wide. This allowed us to seat a total of eight around the dining room table.

When it came to the styling of the dining room, we opted to keep it simple by throwing together a carved wooden bowl full of sand, oyster shells and white pillar candles (pretty and yet low maintenance). On either side of that, we placed a white washed wooden stand with a small vase of flowers.

I was so excited when the Stoney Creek family reached out to me for a lot of reasons but one of them was that I knew we would be able to use these coral shadow boxes somewhere in their home. Having been window shopping a few days before I got the call to design their home, I immediately went back to the store to purchase these! The painted coral delicately attached to the soft linen background helps to add to the overall elegance of the dining room.
