Stoney Creek Project Reveal | the Family Room

“Calming, coastal, kid-friendly… basically what you did at the Abundant Life Partners office,” was the direction that we received when starting out on the design of the Stoney Creek Project. Excited by this, we quickly began dreaming up ways in which we could transform their space. Like a lot of Americans, this sweet family of six had lived in their current space for several years but between work, kids and soccer practice, hadn’t gotten around to really turning their house into a home. The result was that their current space felt dated, uncomfortable and uninspiring. Coming to us, they were ready to make a change, wanting to create something that could be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come.

For this project, we focused on the first floor, which included the: entry, family room, living room, and dining room. Between the addition of new floors, paint, light fixtures, furniture, and decor… this was going to be our biggest transformation yet! Today, we are so excited to share the reveal of the family room with you!

Built in the 1990’s this home had some great features, such as the high ceilings, molding, and bounty of windows; however there were also some less than desirable features such as the carpet, warm wood floors and the dated light fixtures… We knew that in order to really make a difference we were going to have to address these.

While we did keep some pieces of furniture such as the bookcases (above) and a sofa (which we slip covered), for the most part we were starting from scratch!

I mean… can you believe it?! We took what was basically a dark and empty playroom and turned it into something that is now bright, colorful and comfortable. Geared for the whole family (note the sectional), this space now meets a number of needs including: seating (hello family of six!), play (lots of floor space), and storage (bookcase).

Aesthetically we designed this family room to be fun and functional (a.k.a. kid-friendly) while still speaking to the rest of the home. The family was adamant about wanting a faux-leather sectional that could fit their whole family and endure lots of play, so we settled on this dark gray one; prettying it up with lots of chunky throws and layers of pillows. To ensure that it didn’t swallow up the space (with its size and color), we made sure to select an area rug that was light (and yet durable).

Using accent pieces (such as these carved accent tables) and the gallery wall featuring art from a variety of places, we were able to elevate the space. I’m not sure if its the designer in me or just my personal preference but when it comes to “kid spaces” I never want them to feel themey (think: jungle motifs, primary colors, plastic toys, etc.)… yes, they need to be fun and durable but they also need to be beautiful and something that the whole family can enjoy. Its important to create spaces that can evolve with the family - such as this family room here! I mean honestly… it might need some updates but this room could last this way until the kids are in college!

Storage was something that we certainly didn’t want to skimp on in this family room, so keeping the pre-existing bookcases, we simply added in some woven baskets to help keep things pretty and organized. Our client says that the kids just love this little space/alley way that now exists between the bookcases and sectional! They can either play with their toys there or take them out into the room.

I had been eyeing these vintage globes for months now and was so excited when I could finally pull the trigger, sourcing them for this project! They are just cool and fun, and add the perfect pop of color to this space! The brightly colored spines of the books, also add a fun vibe.
