Sands House Reveal | the Little Girl’s Bedroom

Having lived in Annapolis, Maryland for the past thirteen years, it had always been a dream of Laura’s to one day, own a home in the historic district. For years, she would walk-by with her family of five, taking it all in. When the chance came for her and her husband to purchase their dream home years later, they jumped at the opportunity!

A historic landmark, the Sands House has been a feature of Annapolis since the 17th century. Estimated to have been built sometime between 1681 and 1738, it is thought to be the oldest frame house in the Chesapeake region. As with any historic home, this one required a lot of work. Laura admits that, “there were many times throughout the renovation process where I looked back and thought, ‘oh, did we make a mistake?’” The Smith’s hard work and persistence paid off though when after an eighteenth-month renovation, they were able to move into their dream home. Today we are walking you through the design of the little girl’s bedroom!

Just slightly larger than the master bedroom though very similar in design, the plan was for this to be the bedroom of the Smith’s youngest daughter, as well as Kevin’s home office.

AFTER:

How precious is this little girl’s bedroom?? I can’t think of any little girl who wouldn’t be excited to call this her own! Between the canopy bed, plethora of lacey pillows, and lots of space to play this space a dream.

Similar to the master bedroom, we choose to center the daybed on one of the longer walls and flank it with a pair of gorgeous, campaign-style dressers. Being a kids room, we wanted to ensure that there was plenty of space to play and so left a wide pathway across the room. The jute area rug not only helps to brighten things but provides a soft, durable surface for the girls to play on.

We love the opportunity to bring in special, heirloom pieces into our designs, which is what we did here with this wooden dresser. Layered on top is a carved, arch mirror along with some special pieces.

What you can’t see in the photo, is in Kevin’s work space. While we didn’t photograph it, it is in fact there! Bringing in an adjustable wood/metal standing desk, we created a spot for Kevin that blended in with the style of the space but that was functional for his needs. After 2020, with so many of us continuing to work from home, its important to squeeze in a work space when and where you can.

When it came to the design of this little girl’s bedroom, we wanted to create something that felt age appropriate to the home but also something that was fresh. Using the same blue wall color as in the master bedroom, we infused this room with a series of brown tones; whites; and linen/lacey details. The result is something that is beautiful and that will sustain over time.
