The Tug-of-War Between Purchasing Organic vs. Non-Organic
Raise your hand if you too feel like your in the constant battle of, "do I buy organic or non-organic? Should I spend this much on this natural make-up product or use it towards x,y and z?" You've read all of the books and articles about the benefits of buying organic and/or natural products and yet you find yourself in this tug-of-war. When it comes down to the what's holding most of us back is the financial cost. However before signing off shopping organic as something only the rich can afford, consider these three solutions that can ease the process: one, buy organic only for the dirty dozen; two, cut back on the products that you buy and start making your own; and three, give yourself grace and realize that you can only do what you can do. These solutions won't solve all of your problems but they will help to calm battle from within.
Buy Organic When It Comes to The Dirty Dozen
Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a list of the top twelve produce items that are most contaminated by pesticides.* If buying all organic is not in the budget, limiting your organic purchases to the dirty dozen can help you focus your attention on avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables. This year's list includes: strawberries, spinach, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes, and sweet bell peppers.
*Many of the chemicals found on the dirty dozen are banned for use on food in other countries. They technically don't violate U.S. laws because our regulations for pesticides in food are outdated.
Make Your Own Cleaning and Beauty Products
One of the ways that I've been able to purchase more organic beauty products is by: one, cutting back on the amount of total beauty products that I use and instead investing in a select few and two, making my own products. The products that I currently use are ones that I love and stand by. They are a little pricey but when used sparingly, go a long way. The beauty products that I currently make are: dry shampoo, make-up remover, face masks, lotion, bronzer, and foundation powder.
Give Yourself Grace
This last step is one that I have to do the most often when it comes down to the decision of buying organic or not. I have to regularly give myself grace and realize that I can only do what I can do. At this point in time, our family can't afford to eat all organic. It's frustrating and on some level seems unjust as I look over at Europe where they don't have to worry about consuming pesticides like we do, however I also count myself thankful. Thankful that I have the information that I do to make informed choices when and where I can. When it comes to buying organic produce or products, our family does what it can do. If not organic we try to go as natural as possible, always making sure to read the ingredients labels, making food and products from scratch, and eating fresh, whole foods. Our family views what we put in and on our bodies as an investment however we know that we aren't guaranteed to live forever. Giving ourselves some grace helps make the battle a lot easy to manage.
Collaborating with Hound & Sparrow Films this past summer, we partnered to create this beautiful video, sharing the heart behind what we do here at Making Room for Peace.
“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person that you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever - and that is the point of the mountain.”
There are such a variety of juice recipes out there but I continually come back to this one, which has become my go-to. Whenever I drink this, I can literally feel it fueling and nourishing my body!
One of my go-to meals - especially this time of year - is a nourishing lentil soup. Packed with protein, fiber, iron and so much more; this soup is amazing.
We are happy to announce that after a little break, we will be starting Wellness Wednesdays back up, beginning Wednesday January 26th. There, we will be having a conversation with Dr. Sharna Posner on “stretching yourself”.
You can have a beautiful life.
I don’t know if you know that. A lot of people don’t! The thing is, that its a choice. It has nothing to do with money but is really a mindset.
Join us for a conversation with Carrie Nicholes of Cedar Counseling & Wellness on the importance of rest.
It’s the summer of 2021. Wear the shorts. Eat the ice cream, a double scoop of your favorite flavors, waffle cone. Stop saying, “no, no I can’t” when you way to say, “yes, yes I can and I will and I’m on my way.”
I don’t want to say, “oh yeah, I care about sustainability. I care about ‘the least of these.’”. But not do anything. So this Earth Day, let’s DO SOMETHING.
One of which is that when I sit down, I often don’t know what to write. We figured that y’all might be in the same boat, so we’ve done some research and complied a list of journal prompts here today.
It’s a powerful practice designed to encourage us to look within and examine our core values, how we want to show up in this world, how we want to feel.
Looking back on 2020, I think a lot of us could say that at one point or another we were searching for peace. Amidst all of the chaos, the pain and the unknowing I imagine that we tried a variety of things to bring us some sense of calm, some sense of peace.
I started my morning like most others, got up, made coffee, grabbed some toast, and went to sit down on the sofa to watch the sunrise but this morning I have to say, was incredibly powerful.
We love connecting with y’all through beautiful photos on our feeds but there is just something more personal about a video. It is our hope that we will be able to provide consistent video content about our projects, our mission and our adventures.
We here at Making Room for Peace are celebrating today by getting outside (at a social distance) to soak in some sun, breathe in some fresh air and hold gratitude for this beautiful Earth and all that it provides us with.
Our homes are the very places where we gather together with friends and family, where we escape to after a long day - our homes are where memories are made.
Just about every afternoon, I’ve been escaping outdoors (social distance style) to get some fresh air and to PRAY through all of these thoughts and feelings. My heart is that all of this is leading others to do the same. To slow down. To evaluate their lives. To commit to change. To make room for peace.
In light of our climate change crisis, we as a small business wanted to look within to identify ways in which we could make positive change.
So many of you have been asking about this piece and how to make something similar, so today we are giving you the step-by-step on how to create a sculptural wall hanging.
While we are by now means looking for a sprawling lawn or land to farm on, we do dream of having a space where we can entertain our friends and family, have a raised bed or two, and maybe even indulge in a hammock.
One of our core values here at Making Room for Peace is adopting a slower way of life. This movement, also known as “slow living” stands for "sustainable, local, organic, and whole and is about having little impact, shopping local and avoiding mass produced and processed things."
I am excited and honored to share that Making Room for Peace is featured in the newest issue of ORIGIN Magazine!! A small team of artists working in LA, NY, Dallas, and Paris, it is Origin’s belief that beauty and art can uplift the world.

People matter more than the things that we buy is a belief held close to our hearts as well as our friends at Made. Owner Holly and her team work hard to ensure that every item that Made sells supports this belief not just in theory but in action, by caring for the artisans who make their products.
To help out with any shopping angst, we’ve put together a guide of thoughtful, creative, and sustainable gifts for this holiday season. The key behind a lot of them is that they are consumable - aka you appreciate it, enjoy it and then are able to recycle or reuse the item.
Why not elevate your gift wrapping this holiday season by using some sustainable alternatives to all of the wrapping paper, bubble wrap, or cello sheets out there? Not only will you show your loved ones how much you care about them but also how much you care about the environment!
Do you want to know something? A used to be a shopaholic. You know how after you graduate from high school and everyone generously gives you money for your next endeavor be it college or a job? Well I spent most of mine.
When I would think of thrift stores and consignment shops I would envision dirty, poorly lit spaces with clothing that couldn’t possibly be stylish or in good condition. Years later, through some humbling and personal experience, I’ve found that this image that I had had in my mind couldn’t be farther from the truth. While shopping second-hand can be hit or miss, for the most part it is really an enjoyable experience.
Fast-forward to my late twenties, when I started MRFP, where I brought this holistic approach to our business. At the end of the day, I don't just want to create "pretty interiors", I want to design spaces that..
