Detoxing with Purify Infrared Sauna
This morning I did something that I've been wanting to do for quite some time now...go to a sauna! After reading the countless benefits over the past couple of years and how it aids with everything from chronic disease, stress and aging I knew that I wanted to give it a try. I did some research and came across Purify up in Richmond and decided to book a session. The designer in me was instantly drawn to their modern spa-like aesthetic while the consumer in me drawn to the great prices. With my birthday coming up next week I told my husband that to celebrate I'd like to give it a try. I had no idea what to expect (besides the fact that I was going to be doing a lot of sweating) but after doing it once I would say that I'm hooked for life. Already after one visit I can feel a soothing effect on my muscles and joints, and see a change in my complexion.
What is light therapy?
Light therapy, also known as chromotherapy, is a technique of restoring an overall sense of balance by means of applying color to the body. According to the staff at Purify, "it's history is rooted as far back as the Mayan culture, and has been valued as a remarkable source of healing. Light therapy uses colors for their proposed healing abilities in treating emotional and physical disturbances. It is based on the premise that different colors evoke different responses in people. Today, the therapeutic applications of light and color are being investigated in major hospitals and research centers worldwide."
What are the benefits?
Those who practice light therapy can experience a range of therapeutic effects from conditions such as chronic pain, inflammation, depression, immune disorders, and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In terms of aging - something that I've had on my mind with my birthday coming up next week, light therapy can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, and sun spots. It basically helps to revitalize the skin, energizing cells to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which give skin it's youthful glow.
One of the aspects of chromotherapy that I found especially interesting was that the color light that you choose to use during your time in the infared sauna can have varying affects on you.
Red and Pink Light
Red and pink light have energizing properties that help to release stiffness and constrictions; and can stimulate the circulatory systems, which can help with conditions such as arthritis. This light can also increase the body temperature, trigger the sensory nerves that promote hearing, taste, and smell; and can also assist with a rise of metabolism and release of adrenalin.
Yellow Light
ellow light helps to awaken the mind and mental inspiration. It is excellent for nervous or nerve-related ailments and can also be used for conditions of the stomach, liver, and intestines (i.e. eczema, diabetes, liver trouble, gas, and constipation). It encourages clarity of thought and increased awareness.
Green Light
The color green is the universal color of healing and so it's light is used to heal a variety of conditions. It balances and cleanses our energy, providing a sense of renewal and peace. It has been known to help with ulcers, heart problems and stabilizing blood pressure.
Blue Light
Blue light is used to assist with ailments in regards to speech, communication, and the throat. It is the most mentally soothing colors and is associated with loyalty, stability and happiness. It is useful when dealing with sleep issues, speech, and communication.
Purple Light
Purple light is one of the best colors to assist with neurosis, diseases of the scalp, rheumatism, concussion, or epilepsy. It purifies our thoughts and feelings and is a source of great inspiration.
What should I do before going to an infrared sauna?
There is minimal preparation that needs to be made before going to an infrared sauna however it is encouraged that you drink a healthy amount of water before and after your visit. You also want to make sure that your skin is clean and product free, this includes: make-up, lotion, and perfume.
After your time there it is suggested that you wait to shower. It would be a bit of shock to your body which has been working hard to produce a sweat and has released a good deal of collagen and vitamin E. "You kind of marinate in this stuff that’s really good for you," says Sophie Chiche of the Shape House out in California. "The toxins that come out of your body would only affect you if you were breathing it in, so it’s not an issue to leave the sweat on your skin – it’s actually very beneficial. Your skin knows how to protect itself. You won’t see irritation, just glow and nourishment."

There are such a variety of juice recipes out there but I continually come back to this one, which has become my go-to. Whenever I drink this, I can literally feel it fueling and nourishing my body!
One of my go-to meals - especially this time of year - is a nourishing lentil soup. Packed with protein, fiber, iron and so much more; this soup is amazing.
We are happy to announce that after a little break, we will be starting Wellness Wednesdays back up, beginning Wednesday January 26th. There, we will be having a conversation with Dr. Sharna Posner on “stretching yourself”.
Something that every one of our decluttering clients has in common is that when we come in for our consultation, I can just sense that they are experiencing feelings of embarrassment, discouragement and so many other things.
It’s no surprise that after the past few years we’ve had, people are longing for peace and calm. This trend is very much reflected in the color of the year - green.
Something that I’ve been meditating on and preaching to myself… “You are responsible for your happiness. In fact, you create it. You attract it. You manifest it. You are the architect of your reality…”
When looking at this office, most people would look at it and say, “yeah, this was definitely designed by Making Room for Peace.” With nods toward our signature California-coastal style, office 05 is certainly a peaceful retreat.
Taking our cue from the beautiful, wooded-view, we transformed this corner-office into a peaceful, professional retreat. Being the office of Carrie, the owner and founder of Cedar, we wanted it to feel substantial.
One of the things love about office 02 is the richness of the hues, particularly: the charcoal sofa paired with these chestnut floor lamps; next to the jewel-tone pillows. All of these elements combined create a really beautiful and interesting space for clients.
You can have a beautiful life.
I don’t know if you know that. A lot of people don’t! The thing is, that its a choice. It has nothing to do with money but is really a mindset.
Join us for a conversation with Carrie Nicholes of Cedar Counseling & Wellness on the importance of rest.
This afternoon we teamed up with Jasmine Weatherly, owner of Pure Barre Falls Church for a killer workout! We can’t wait to go back for more
In our discussion, Meghan provided a clear picture of what depression is as well as several ways to treat it. We really enjoyed this conversation and know that you will too!
Over the years, I’ve found that there are some tips and tricks that have helped me cope with my social anxiety and continue to go about my day-to-day living.
Yesterday we had a beautiful conversation with Carrie Nicholes of Cedar Counseling and Wellness on the topic of anxiety. Carrie is a clinical therapist and certified yoga teacher based in Annapolis, MD.
In an effort to further these passions and better connect with our community, we are starting a series called Wellness Wednesdays. Every Wednesday at 3:00 PM we will have a discussion with a professional in the wellness field on Making Room for Peace’s Instagram Live
One of which is that when I sit down, I often don’t know what to write. We figured that y’all might be in the same boat, so we’ve done some research and complied a list of journal prompts here today.
Inspired by the natural light and the knowledge that this room would be used primarily by kids we wanted to keep the vibe light and playful.
Our inspiration for Abundant Life Partner’s Office 01 largely came from the fact that this office was going to be used primarily by children. That being the case it was important that we designed things to be durable!
Walking into Abundant Life Partner’s waiting room, you are immediately enveloped with a feeling of warmth and safety. Check out the space!

The healing benefits of tea are amazing and something that I recently met up to discuss with Mai-Anh of Discover Teas. Along with getting into the nourishing properties of tea, we also talked about the story of Discover Teas, about women supporting women, and the importance of community.
Every year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. Whether you yourself suffer with mental illness or you have a friend or family member who suffers, we have all been affected in some way by mental illness.
Wife, mother of four, and owner of Abundant Life Partner’s, Meghan is one busy woman! I wanted to sit down with her to learn her secrets to having such a positive attitude, energy and how she makes room for peace in her life.
When discussing the design of her office, Meghan was looking for something that was professional while also being fresh and serene. We selected a soothing color palette of grays, blues, and warm woods with pops of brass and greenery.
Often times when we talk about decluttering we discuss "removing things", "shedding items", or "letting go" but there is so much more to it that than that! When we shed what is no longer serving us we are letting go in one sense but we are also making room for more - more time, energy, space, money…
Whether it's a 3 hour road trip up to Northern Virginia or an international flight, these are the 5 items that I can't travel without...
Even though God graciously healed me from the anxiety and depression that I used to suffer from, I still go through occasional bouts of each (lasting anywhere from 3 - 10 days). These bouts can be triggered by a variety of things but more often than not stem from: a hormonal imbalance and negative thoughts. I talk a lot about "peace" around here and I want you to know that you can still have it even while occasionally struggling with these issues.
“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person that you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever - and that is the point of the mountain.”
