Interior Design Trends 2022

I have to admit, I’m usually not one for “design trends” but the ones predicted for this coming year have me excited! Scroll down to see what you can expect to see more of come 2022.

More Vintage Than Ever

"With shortages popping up in supply chains and the important increase of focus on the environment, I think the celebration of one-of-a-kind finds will be an increasingly important trend in the new year," predicts Next Wave designer Sara Hillery. "Not only are vintage finds a greener choice for design with upcycling, they are also laden with unique details that are expensive to re-create." (source)

Living Room Bar

Whether its a drink cart, custom built-in, or an old vintage cupboard (as shown here) people are bringing back the living room bar.

Natural Lighting

Given how much time we’re spending indoors now-a-days, having large windows that provide natural light and clear views of the outdoors is critical.

Black Accents

Black accents continue in their popularity as we enter into 2022. We’ve personally used them in numerous projects this past year (i.e. the Toano Project, Cedar Project, Abundant Life Partners office) in the form of hardware, mirrors, furniture, and accessories.

Black accents add depth and contrast to a space, especially when paired against a light, neutral background.

Greater Investment in Outdoor Rooms

Following the pandemic, I’ve found that more and more, people are looking for ways to create flexible, functional spaces; particularly through the use of outdoor rooms. Whether it be a sprucing up a balcony or adding an addition to the back of the house, people want that option.

Natural Materials

Something that I’ve heard from friends, families and strangers alike is their desire for “natural materials”. More and more I find that people want to live in simple (another word for minimal), fresh, bright spaces surrounded by natural materials (think: wood, woven pieces, etc.). What people are desiring is that warmth and simplicity.

Textured Fabric

Velvet, Turkish rugs, boucles… people are loving cozy, textured fabrics! We tend to incorporate a lot of these in the form of throw pillows and wall art (see the Westmoreland Project living room).

Mixing Dark & Earthy Tones

Black, brown, copper, green… these are the tones you can expect to see a lot of going into 2022. Sofas with curves, rich wood tones, hammered metal… we are all for it!

More Houseplants

I can’t remember the last time that “more houseplants” wasn’t on a design trends list but the fact is, this trend is carrying on. Health benefits and aesthetics aside, after being stuck inside for so long the past couple of years, people have been continuing to search for ways to bring the outside in.

Versatile Spaces

One of the biggest trends that we have seen the past year or so has been the necessity of versatile spaces. Whether its a bedroom, a living room or your kitchen, it has never been more important to create well thought out spaces in terms of design and function. This is especially true for: storage, sound insulation, flexibility of the furniture, etc.

Color & Pattern Everywhere

A combination of the pandemic and the past few years of minimalism, color and pattern are back with a vengeance. We found this to be true with many of our most recent projects, particularly the Fords Colony project, where our clients wanted to do something beautiful and “fun”!
